Over the past year, E.W. Scripps has made OTT one of their top company priorities. They are investing in both audio OTT (podcasts) and video OTT. They have made a number of strategic acquisitions in this space and this opening keynote will specifically focus on some new OTT initiatives that are coming out of their Newsy division. These are applicable to markets of all sizes. Just a great session to kick things off!

“You can’t tell me that time spent isn’t a proxy for relevance” said Mark Contreras when talking about his company’s decision to double down on OTT. Calkins was an early adopter. They’ve been working on a video and OTT strategy for more than three years and have launched several of the most innovative and successful local media products in the county. In this session, Contreras will lay out the case for OTT including research on average daily consumption and streaming service adoption versus cable subscriptions. He’ll also share an update on their progress and lessons learned along the way.

OTT revenue is projected to reach $32 billion globally by 2019 according to multiple sources. While much of this will go to big players such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, local revenue is also expected to grow dramatically. Rick Ducey will break down the projections and point out the opportunity areas for local media companies.

    • Graham Media Group launched their OTT strategy in the fall of 2016. They will share their content and revenue plan during this session.
  • WRAL – John Conway, General Manager WRAL.com
    • WRAL launched a full blown OTT strategy in the summer of 2016. They are focusing on local news and high school sports. They are having success with a sponsorship revenue model. Hear all about it in this session!
