We characterize leadership in so many ways -- from the ability to inspire and influence success in others through an admirable attitude, to setting a positive example that graciously influences our environment. Do you know of someone that has enhanced the local and community newspaper industry in at least one of the following ways?
- Pioneered new initiatives in local and community newspaper publishing.
- Exemplified the excellence of local and community newspapers by publishing exceptional newspapers, Web sites and niche products.
- Provided civic leadership within the community or communities in which his or her products serve.
- Has enhanced the local newspaper industry through leadership in areas related to local/community newspaper publishing and/or through services to Local Media Association.*
*Membership or involvement with Local Media Association is not part of the criteria to win the Dean Lesher Award. Dedicated service to Local Media Association can be used in a letter of nomination and can be one of several factors that judges may consider when recommending a final candidate.
How to Nominate:
To nominate a candidate, simply fill out our online Nomination Form, attach a written letter of nomination on company letterhead in the field provided and include as much supporting material and information as possible. Many qualified entries are received each year, therefore it is very important that the nomination address the above criteria and include concrete examples.

The winner will be announced in July and will be presented with the award at Local Media Associations Fall Publishers' & Advertising Directors' Conference in St. Louis, September 17-20, 2013.

2012 Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Betty Carr.
From a humble start as a part timer in the classified department of Oshawa This Week, Betty Carr forged an outstandingly successful decades-long career in the community newspaper industry. Now, capping off her professional career from which she just recently retired, Carr has been selected to receive the Local Media Association 2012 Dean S. Lesher Award. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her company, community and the local newspaper industry at large, Carr has been resoundingly chosen for this lifetime achievement award, LMA’s highest honor.
